HUA HUN SPECIALTY COFFEE GUIDE

BY TREMOR CHRIST

A weekend escape for many Bangkok-ites, the retirement bonanza of Hua Hin has actually managed to conjure some truly good coffee shops. Despite beach towns usually falling prey to the tired old cold-coffee craze, with perhaps a Starbucks tucked inside a newly constructed mall, the general landscape bodes poorly for those of caffeine inclinations.

Spread from the northern part near Cha Am, and all the way down to the tip where the highway curls inward, are some truly excellent places to park your bums and sip pour-overs, espresso and cold coffee. With a good mix of specialty coffee's, more accessible medium/dark roast flat white style drinks and everything in between, below is a list to begin your vacation battleplans.

Most of the places mentioned also sell beans, so if you carry a grinder and travel set-up, this is your time to shine.

GALLERY DRIP

Our favourite place in Copenhagen for coffee, super friendly, knowledgable but not snobby, and coffee that has some soul to it. They sell an array of products and beans and the interiors are a mix between Japanese kitsch and Scandinavian cool.

SRNA

Take-away only, but a great spot to grab a specialty coffee or an ice version if you can handle sitting at the benches out front in the intense heat. They sell bags of beans also.

VELO

Another coffee shop that roasts their own beans and blends, and has a snazzy cold coffee served in a can they press in shop. There are a few local coffee beans but also a nice collection of imported specialty beans.

DRIP RIMLAY

If the beach is calling but you don't want to settle for a muddy, bitter brew, then find a sunbed near this shack and sample some of their home-roasted beans. Definitely the best coffee you are going to find this close to the ocean.

ROCK N ROAST

Closer to Cha Am than Hua Hin, this tiny store by the side of the main road sells coffee, a lot of coffee. Their selection is excellent, and if you get stuck deciding on what to buy, you can always order a coffee while you're browsing.

PAKKATI COFFEE STUDIO

Virtually impossible to accidentally walk into due to it's distance from the sidewalk, Pakkati also have a huge array of beans on sale, and a coffee counter if you prefer to just sip in situ.

CHIFFON CAFE

Mostly visited by vacationers aching for a cold sweet ice-coffee, Chiffon do have a couple of bags on sale from Terroir and other solid roasters, so it's worth popping by for a look.
