SPECIALTY COFFEE GUIDE TO MELAKA

BY TREMOR CHRIST

Hotter than a barbeque in hell, Melaka is often overlooked in favour of Kuala Lumpur and Georgetown on the tourist trail through Malaysia. More often than not the town lies asleep under hot blankets until the weekend when a few Singaporeans eyeing a bargain drive across the border.

Home to an extremely vibrant food scene, coffee is not the first thing one thinks about when hearing the name. However, as with many smaller towns in Malaysia, the Third Wave coffee culture has started to bite.

Below in no particular order are the coffee shops that position themselves apart from the instagram cafe culture that seems so prevalant. This is all about the coffee, nothihng more, nothing less.

Ironically enough, a few of the coffee shops below happen to be in the "peeling paint & aching loss" category, but that is more a consequence of decrepid buildings rather than attempting to land in Wallpaper magazine.

COFFEE BAR 125+

TUE-SUN | 830am - 230pm

125 serves solid pourovers in a quiet old house with just enough decay to make you feel like you're not in a coffee shop designed by a venture capitalist. There are a few specialty beans on display to choose between, or you can settle for the house blend if you're bad at decision making.

They also sell beans for those that have the means and the ways to brew on the road.

Another renegade caffeinator roasting his own beans and preparing tasty pourovers at this fairly new cafe. Worth a visit if you're in these parts of town.

For those missing the taste of Parisian boulangerie's, pop by for a delectable croissant (and other pastries), order a coffee and head upstairs, or buy some beans by weight from the counter. A little gem that operates under the Daily Fix umbrella.

Trang is an often-overlooked stop on the backpacker route south, most travellers opting to fly into Krabi or Phuket before taking ferries down to Malaysia. To their detriment, they are missing out on one of Southern Thailands most caffeine addicted cities. Home to everything from Modbar espresso houses, pourover hipster cafe's in old houses, and neighborhood caffeine dealers, spending a few days in this sleepy town is an eye-opening experience.

Margate may not be a destination most people associate with coffee, but you'd be wrong to assume that the best you'll find is an instant polystyrene cup with a lump of sugar. Gone are the days of nescafe splurges, dig a little deeper and you'll find some truly exciting coffee shops sprinkled around the area.

Good coffee is the perfect start to any day, so finding the best coffee in Kuala Lumpur was a task we didn't take lightly. After months of light-headed research here are the places we think serve you the best versions of popular coffee renditions. Some places are for the lazy Sunday coffee with an iPad, others are reserved for true coffee nerds, but with a little guidance you'll be resisting the urge to order a "Grande" and settle for some true local charm instead.

Istanbul is more than a sludgy cup of gritty coffee. For the past decade the third-wave coffee entrepreneurs have been hard at work creating some cafes that are truly worthy of detours. The Mouth's editor spent months researching and visiting almost every cafe conceivable before coming up with this hand-picked list.

Newer to the specialty coffee world than upstairs neighbour Norway, Copenhagen has come leaps and bounds in the past few years. Still relatively thin on the ground in terms of choice, the few good coffee shops in town do a solid enough job that you can keep them on rotation and not be too fussed about more options, for now.
