THE FRENCH INVASION
Perched far from the hissing streets of Ho Chi Minh, Hanoi offers a slightly diffused experience for the sensitive soul. Blessed with acres of tiny alleyways in which all manner of treats can be discovered, this city really is a walkers paradise. Despite having to keep your wits about you to avoid a stray scooter, the best thing to do is skip public transport and head out into the wild, following your nose to some of the local hotspots.
With decade long experience in unmasking Hanoi's food offerings, combined with a few whispers from respected chefs, the plan was set in action and The Mouth's trusty broth lord tasted far too many mediocre dishes in order to serve you up the cream of the crop.
A couple of cafes in which to rest your weary legs have been thrown in for shits and giggles. Hanoi might not have the best Pho in Vietnam, but they sure do have some other tasty offerings.
Below are our favourite spots, after suffering through quite a few middle-of-the-road plates.

The saltiest, dankest, desirous bowl of Pho you'll find in Hanoi. Yes it's shabby and the sight of hanging flesh may curl your toes, but this broth keeps you dipping your spoon until you're spent.
Our favourite Bun Cha in Hanoi, even though we are not the biggest Bun Cha fans. However, there is nothing quite like sitting on plastic stools in an alleyway as people mill past you and waiters scurry off with hot bowls of pork.
Discipline yourself to stop assuming just because it is near the church, its going to be trash. These fine ladies make some of the best Banh Mi in town.
Another corker of a Pho spot with super salty broth, but umami bomb level.
Our favourite Banh Mi in Hanoi.
This Japanese-owned chain may very well be some of the best pizza you'll find in Asia, let alone Vietnam.
Nothing hits quite like a bowl of Bun Bo Nam Bo from here. Laced with noodles, greens, acid and spice, there is no stopping the mouth symphony when you take your first slurp.
Chicken versions of Pho are not something we usually eat, but they do a mighty fine job highlighted by the constant scooter pick-ups, and packed dining room. Delicate, sippable broth with all the usual suspects.
Granted, it's a peculiar name for an Indian restaurant, but this place does everything right. 100% worth trading in an evening of local cuisine for a walk down Indian lane.
Famous for their red wine beef soup which countless banh mi are dipping into until you're so full you have to be rolled out the shop. The broth is a touch too sweet, but it's worthy of your coins.
Slightly outside the main drag means you'll get authentic Pho, and less chance to encounter a Vlogger from hell. Solid broth with the added bonus of stir frying the meat which lends a different flavour to raw slices plonked in.
A twenty minute taxi ride from the lakeside, and not a single tourist in sight. The best place to bring a laptop, have a coffee and write a novel.
Hanoi's quirky little gem.
Our favourite perch to judge the world as it passes by.
Say one day you feel like venturing into the western demographic and bite into a superb burger, then this is your saving grace. Exceptional comfort food in modern surroundings.
